Admission

Children attend Sharmans Cross for four years from 7 to 11 years of age (Years 3, 4, 5 and 6).  In National Curriculum terms this is known as Key Stage 2.

At present 90 children can be admitted each year, and places are offered in line with the Local Education Authority’s Admissions Policy.

When should I apply for a junior school place?

You should apply for a junior school place for your child at the beginning of Year 2.

The timetable for applying for a junior school place is as follows:
September 2011            Applications sent out through infant schools
16 January 2012            Closing date for receipt of application forms
February 2012               Cabinet Members Advisory Panel for Admissions
23 April 2012                 Offer and refusal letters sent out to parents
11 May 2012                  Deadline for parents to accept or decline place offered

What are the admission criteria for places at community junior schools?
If a junior school receives more applications for its Year 3 classes than there are places available, places will be allocated in the following way:

Priority 1    Applications on exceptional grounds

Priority 2    Applications from children attending the linked infant schools

Priority 3    Applications from within the catchment zone or an adjoining zone on the grounds of having a brother or sister attending the school or the linked infant school at the same time

Priority 4    Other applications from within the catchment zone

Priority 5    All other applications on the grounds of having a brother or sister attending the school or the linked infant school at the same time

Priority 6    All other applications allocated on the actual distance measured in a straight line from the child’s home address to the school

What are exceptional grounds?
Exceptional grounds are circumstances that can only be catered for by one particular school. Because all of our schools are resourced in the same way and have similar facilities there are very few exceptional circumstances that mean a child can only attend one particular school.

What is a linked infant school?
All infant schools have an identified linked junior school. Parents of children at the infant school have a guaranteed place at the linked junior school if they wish to accept it. If you want to take up a place at the linked junior school you must still complete the application form and name the linked junior school as a preference.
If you want to take up place at the linked junior school you must still accept it.

Children joining the school mid year are admitted on a Wednesday to ease the stress of transition.  This gives them a 3 day settling in period before they are asked to complete a full week.  Each new child will be welcomed by a class buddy who will show them where to go and what to do.

Additional Information

Following consultation, the Governing Body has agreed that the admission number of our school is 90.
It is a calculation based on the ‘Sufficiency Survey’ conducted by the Local Authority to determine the appropriate number of children in relation to the space and resources available.

To allow our numbers to go even higher would potentially have a detrimental impact on both the children and learning opportunities we can offer.  The high standards we achieve could be in danger of being compromised and this is not something the school would sanction.
